Top 10 Choosing Beggars of the Week (July 20, 2023)

Desperate times may call for desperate measures, but some of these choosing beggars are really reaching... 

 

We've got a wide range of them for this week's edition of the Top Choosing Beggars. Some of these scenarios include a wedding day Uber pool, a dude who wants a free lawyer to sue just about everyone under the sun, and various job postings with little to no pay. We even have a saga involving a wannabe equestrian photographer with no talent and a whole lot of audacity. 

 

If these stories serve as any indication, it may take a special kind of desperate person to boldly make demands online, but these people seem to come out in droves all over the Internet. So why is it that the choosing beggars of the world tend to be their ridiculous selves online? Perhaps it's the seemingly harmless anonymity of the Internet or the distance that comes with making these kinds of demands through online messaging and not face-to-face. Because sure if this was in-person, these folks would know better.

    Font - My daughter and I are horse people (and d do I have to work hard to support this lifestyle, lol). I have ridden my whole life - regularly until I got Lyme. My daughter has ridden since she was a child. We are extremely fortunate to be at a gorgeous barn with the best trainer ever.

    Font - There is a photographer, L, that I met through a business networking group. He typically does family photos, sports events, parties, etc. He seems like a nice enough guys, and his work is pretty good. Nothing special but nice shots. He called me a couple weeks ago and told me he wanted to break into equestrian photography and would I have any advice on how to do that. I invited him to our barn to discuss.

    Font - He came and had a terrific time, took some photos, and we talked about having him attend a horse show with us. In return for the trainer and the barn girls advising him on what he should be looking for and what angles to shoot during the show, he would provide prints at low cost. We talked about how valuable the trainer's time was and yet she was willing to take the time with him.     Font - but because I asked her, she would advise the photographer at the show, and also allow him to attend a group jumping lesson for more training. Obviously she is not a photographer, but is well versed in what actions shots of horses should involve. L seemed very excited about the opportunity and seemed to understand the value.

Instead of providing low cost shots in exchange for knowledge in horse behavior, action, etc, he decided that he "needs $1000 up front" to attend the show, and needs assurance he will be the only photographer there.     Font - I listen to the VM the following morning, call him back, and ask "what's the loan for?", he replies "I need to pay my rent and buy an engagement ring for my [super long distance] girlfriend."
